Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake City, Georgia. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in this domain, and testing locations are available nationwide. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, often taken from the crown. Opt for testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in the drug screening process. It's preferred by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. It offers a detection window of up to 90 days, difficult to manipulate, while urine tests are better for recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It is recommended to utilize a jeweler’s scale to weigh the amount. If head hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory processing consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of the sample into the lab's database. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not included in an electronic documentation system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. While it is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, an affirmative screening result must be validated for judicial legitimacy. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need follow-up confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and processed for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug testing is acknowledged as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive tests are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is executed under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair tests identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair tests are hard to tamper with, delivering more precise outcomes.
  • Captures past usage pattern: It charts drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally higher in cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair pigment and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the root beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
