Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Leathersville, Georgia. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

The approach to drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests in recent years. A hair drug test is increasingly being mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals instead of the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, and their difficult-to-manipulate nature. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective mechanism for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. The growing hair shaft locks in biomarkers, offering a retrospective timeline of substance use. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection span of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary testing, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for determining the specimen weight. In instances where scalp hair is lacking, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result incorporates four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This phase involves ensuring the sample’s secure sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and managing any extra data entry not covered by an automated chain of custody protocol.

Screening executes a preliminary examination for substance use. Although it is a cost-effective strategy for excluding substance use in most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates confirmation for legal validity. Presumptive positive samples in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. This step involves extracting substances from hair at a notably lower concentration relative to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), thereby making hair analysis the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result obtained in screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before needing confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations detect substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data provision: It offers insight into the pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify immediate use: It takes 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically entail greater costs compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of substances detected in hair.

Take note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the method assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Leathersville, GA, hair follicle testing proves superior to urine testing. Its main advantage lies in its broader detection scope and accuracy over prolonged periods. Compared to urine testing, which captures recent use, hair testing paints a more comprehensive picture of a user's behavior, distinguishing itself by its enhanced reliability and less likelihood of sample tampering, which is common in urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle drug testing offers a far-reaching timeline, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This lengthy detection period grants employers a detailed overview of an individual's substance use history, specifics that are critical when evaluating potential employees in Leathersville, GA. Hair tests offer a distinct advantage by delivering an expansive historical record of drug usage.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing boasts a highly tamper-resistant methodology in Leathersville, GA. By significantly reducing the risk of sample manipulation or substitution, this testing type ensures the integrity and authenticity of results. This reliability makes it a preferred choice for those seeking dependable confirmation of drug use, free from the common pitfalls of tampering associated with other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
