Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Louisville, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing hair testing, with facilities available across all cities nationwide to conduct hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is needed. Hair tests are versatile, allowing for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often require a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. These tests are especially favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal entities, and probationary individuals. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection timeline for drug usage, typically up to 90 days, noted for its nearly foolproof nature. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

The power of hair testing lies in its ability to detect both drug and alcohol consumption effectively. Hair serves as a timeline, securely holding onto biomarkers within its growing strands, offering a comprehensive view. Hair samples gathered close to the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to three months. Hair is easily collected, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Cutting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for conducting screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the hair sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. Here, scalp hair specifically denotes head hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. It includes confirming the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and updating any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening essentially acts as a preliminary assessment for detecting drugs of abuse. While this is a cost-efficient method for discarding drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples presumed positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much reduced concentrations in comparison to other techniques (like urine or saliva). This makes hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before final confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Low possibility of tampering: The difficulty in altering hair drug tests enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Chronological data provision: The test can outline a timeline of substance use rather than only indicating recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to register in hair samples.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur more costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics such as color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle found beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Louisville, GA, hair testing reigns superior. Hair follicle tests offer heightened detection accuracy and trustworthiness, making them the preferred choice. This testing method excels in recognizing long-term patterns of substance use, unlike urine tests, which are limited to short-term detection.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Louisville, GA, recognize the value in hair follicle testing for its extended detection period. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, this method provides a more thorough assessment of an individual’s substance history. Thus, employers gain a complete perspective on their candidates.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Louisville, GA, are incredibly reliable, significantly minimizing the chances of tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
