Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Luthersville, Georgia. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in such testing, offering centers across the nation for hair sampling. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown is required, though body hair may also suffice. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific hair test needs.

Recently, drug screenings are increasingly employing hair follicle tests. A variety of employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine diagnostics. Ideal for entities maintaining zero-tolerance policies against drug use, these tests are also adopted by courts and those on probation. Hair follicle testing is advantageous due to its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, uses an observed collection procedure, and is extremely difficult to deceive. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fiber structure of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, reasonably resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of logging a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional required data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive result necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require additional verification.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, an additional portion of hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in alternative analyses (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Verification of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo a wash before any necessary confirmatory steps. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analyses can identify drug use for up to three months, unlike urine tests, which have a lesser detection span.
  • Difficult to adulterate: Cheating a hair drug examination is very challenging, hence increasing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It gives a timeline of drug use over a period, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unsuitable for immediate detection: Detectable drug traces in hair appear approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically cost more than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and personal growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
