Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests across Lyerly, Georgia. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our expertise is backed by testing centers spread across all cities nationwide, capable of conducting such assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2-inch hair samples from your head or body are sufficient. Analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in drug testing methods. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair testing to urine tests. This type of testing supports zero-tolerance workplace policies and judicial requirements. One of its chief advantages is a detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results over the observed collection process and posing significant challenges to any form of deception. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages engaged in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the beginning stage of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift check for drugs. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples presenting presumptive positives in Screening undergo further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening process, more hair is extracted from the initial collection and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are pulled from hair at significantly lower levels than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Any positive result from the screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
