Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Macedonia, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across Nationwide cities equipped to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair may suffice for testing. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, along with courts and probationary terms, lean on hair follicle tests. Their principal advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, with observation ensuring accuracy, making deception nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a strong instrument for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair holds extended records of alcohol and substances by capturing biomarkers inside the fibres of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer an approximate three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or over 10 panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair indicate scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. It features confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use in many samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is provisionally positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All provisional positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is notably challenging to beat a hair drug test, providing more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: It can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Costs: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
