In Manor, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers across numerous cities Nationwide that can perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other custom hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly used for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers find it beneficial due to its longer detection window of up to 90 days, its observed collection process, and minimal risk of tampering. However, within the initial 5-day window of usage, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period of drug and alcohol use. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be utilized. When referring to head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of the sample within the laboratory system. This process includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not integrated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a rapid check for drug use. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold legal credibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in line with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair labeling and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to fake a hair drug test, rendering the reports more reliable.
  • Presents historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the actual test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
