Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Mayfield, Georgia. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair analysis and have accessible facilities across every city nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. These tests examine substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other specialized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those under probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with observed collection that is nearly impossible to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drugs used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. The process of hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be admissible in court. Any samples that test presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent-use detection: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistency: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mayfield, GA
Hair follicle testing surpasses conventional urine tests by offering a broader detection window and enhanced accuracy. While urine tests are more common, they often miss longer-term substance use. In contrast, hair testing provides reliable results that present a clear picture of an individual's history, providing the assurance that employers need to maintain a safe working environment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Mayfield, GA
One significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days. This duration allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history. Compared to shorter-term tests, hair testing offers a more thorough assessment, which is beneficial in various employment and legal scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
