Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Merrillville, Georgia. If there is a requirement for a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments, with facilities in all major cities nationwide ready to conduct the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for drug assessments. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse Specialists now prefer hair drug assessments over traditional urine tests. These evaluations are chosen by employers with no-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation cases. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, carried out through an observed collection process, making it near impossible to manipulate. However, to determine usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. If collected from the scalp region, hair can reveal substance use for up to around a three-month period for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample made up of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. When scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the introductory processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This incorporates ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: This test can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
