Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Modoc, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we are the experts in hair testing, with centers in cities across the Nation equipped for the task. Generally, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. These tests can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other options.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly rely on these tests over traditional urine tests. Those with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation entities, favor hair follicle tests for their extended detection duration, often up to 90 days, and their observed collection process which makes tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have grown in popularity as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the sprouting hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month insight into drug and alcohol presence. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 strands of hair (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of bodily hair might be obtained. When discussing head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Within the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome, the four pivotal steps encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process consists of affirming proper sealing and dispatch of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not sourced from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of specimens, a positive result necessitates further validation for courtroom acceptability. Any specimens that appear positive during the Screening phase require secondary confirmation.

If a specimen is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are pulled from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to conduct.

Positive screening confirmations undergo GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS evaluations. All suspected positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The end-to-end lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior, compared to urine tests, which have a more fleeting detection span.
  • Resilience to evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying immediate usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth could influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself scrutinizes the hair strand, rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
