In Mora, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing is your trusted provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by facilities across all major cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for the test. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke testing options to suit your needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common, replacing traditional urine tests as the preferred method. Recognized by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, this test is especially favored by those with zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage is its extended detection window, which reaches up to 90 days, collected under observation, making cheating virtually impossible. For recent substance use though, urine testing remains the gold standard for precision in detecting drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering a comprehensive long-term history of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline for substances like alcohol extending up to roughly three months. Hair is effortless to collect, quite resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, equivalent body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The key phases in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing into a laboratory's database. This process involves ensuring the sample is secure and correctly dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data that isn't captured by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening consists of a quick preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples deemed positive at this stage necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is flagged as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. Instances of presumptive positivity undergo a pre-confirmation wash if necessary. Reviewed from Accessioning to Confirmation under the guidance of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical usage patterns: It provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Different factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Important: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle residing under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
