Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services right in Morris, Georgia. For hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, supported by a nationwide network of testing centers ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is applicable. Our hair tests are versatile, analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation utilize hair follicle testing because it offers longer detection, up to 90 days, and involves an observed sample collection that is nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug markers within the strands as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair is easily collected, harder to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. All other hair varieties (like facial or axillary) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the sample being processed into the laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial, rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to discard drug use in most samples, any positive result from Screening needs confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show a preliminary positive result during Screening require further verification.

If a preliminary positive result is found in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a far lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can uncover drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection spectrum.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the results' reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to determine recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair assessments typically incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
