Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Mountain View, Georgia benefits from the comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers span across all cities Nationwide, offering the convenience of local testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary for most procedures, facilitating the detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has surged in popularity, becoming a preferred method in drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now often favor this technique over traditional urine testing. Entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, probation requirements, and court orders value the extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days provided by hair tests. Although for recent drug consumption, urine tests remain the go-to due to their accuracy within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeline for the presence of alcohol and various drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.)

Process Overview

The main stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is incorporated into the lab's system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not included in the electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid test for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require another confirmation step.

Should the Screening phase suggest a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies to perform.

Verification of any positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo a washing process before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug test results is extremely difficult, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent usage: Drugs typically become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rate factors can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
