Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Norristown, Georgia. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers are available nationwide for convenient access. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, trace alcohol/ETG, or include other specialized tests.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly standard for drug screening, overtaking traditional urine tests. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, hair tests align with zero-tolerance policies due to their extended detection capability—up to 90 days—and tamper-resistant nature. However, urinalysis is still deemed optimal for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended account of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol consumption over a period of up to about 90 days. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield a 100mg sample, the preferred amount for testing and verification. However, for EtG, supplemental tests, or for panels exceeding 10 drugs, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable mass of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning phase, the sample undergoes initial entry into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is well-sealed and correctly sent, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, any positive finding in Screening must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Samples yielding presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate further verification.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to enter the Extraction process. Here, drugs are taken from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which renders hair screening the most intricate method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening findings. All samples marked as presumptive positive undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect over a shorter timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are difficult to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical use: Indicates trends in drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates impact drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
