In Northeast Cobb, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair assessments, with testing facilities nationwide equipped to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized analyses.

Hair follicle testing has become more common for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are tough to deceive, although urine tests remain accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When clipped close to the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp gives 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we reference head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails introducing a sample into the lab's system. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional information not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can trace drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Northeast Cobb, GA, the choice between hair and urine testing reveals the advantages of hair follicle tests. While traditional urine tests are common, hair tests boast superior detection and reliability, making them a preferred option.
The extended detection period and difficulty in tampering offer distinct benefits, ensuring employers can trust the results and make informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
