At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Norwood, Georgia. Whether you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in this area and have testing facilities across all major cities in the nation that offer hair testing services. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is typically needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Lately, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly. Employers, legal institutions, and those in Substance Abuse services are more frequently opting for hair tests over conventional urine analysis. Organizations with stringent drug policies, as well as legal and probationary entities, prefer hair drug tests for their extended drug use detection window—up to 90 days. These tests are conducted under observation and are challenging to tamper with, although urine tests remain the gold standard for detection within the last 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term records of alcohol and drugs by sealing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab process of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an affordable method to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is deemed the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples hinting at positivity are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab approach from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistant to deception: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a drug use pattern over some time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variation may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis specifically targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
