Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments within Oakland Heights, Georgia. Should a hair drug or alcohol assessment be necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with facilities available across numerous cities nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. This type of test is utilized by zero-tolerance workplaces, the judiciary, and probation departments due to its extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, when collected under supervision, and is almost impossible to manipulate. Still, urine testing remains effective for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains biomarkers within its strands, offering a comprehensive history of substance use. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence over a duration of up to roughly 3 months. It is easy to collect, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

Four primary phases encompass the lab processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample enters the lab’s system initially. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and fills in any missing data not supplied by an electronic custody chain.

Screening constitutes a preliminary and swift drugs-of-abuse check. While it's a cost-effective way to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen demands confirmation for courtroom acceptance. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening undergo further verification.

Upon a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid testing, which is why hair drug testing represents a more complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is very difficult to cheat a hair drug test, making the results more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
