Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug tests in Ochlocknee, Georgia. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and has locations in all cities across the nation to conduct the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can include customized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly prefer hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with strict drug policies, the justice system, and those on probation, owing to their extended detection capability, typically up to 90 days. Samples are collected under supervision, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a lengthy history of alcohol and drugs by sequestering biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer up to around a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from just above the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair specifies scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in a lab consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to identify drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most intricate procedure.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as needed before confirmation. Every part of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely hard to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring higher accuracy.
  • Shows historical data: It reveals patterns of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
