Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing serves Oglethorpe, Georgia. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers across the country ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation authorities, hair tests offer a detection window of 90 days, are collected under observation, and are nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding markers within the strands as the hair grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches in length, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which serves as the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Measuring with a jeweler’s scale is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug test result handling involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with integrating the sample into the laboratory system, ensuring it was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing entries not catered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary, swift evaluation for substance abuse. While cost-effective for identifying drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result via Screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test provisionally positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a sample is provisionally positive, further portions are taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than is possible with alternative methods (for instance, urine or saliva), making hair drug examination the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any potentially positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously reviewed under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug consumption up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a more limited scope.
  • Low potential for deception: It is notably challenging to alter a hair drug test outcome, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: This method reveals a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Ineffectual for immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and personal growth differences can alter drug metabolite levels detected in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the examination is conducted on the hair shaft itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
