Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia. We specialize in hair drug and alcohol testing, with testing centers available nationwide. To conduct a hair test, you generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have leaned more towards hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer this over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of this test is its up to 90-day detection period, administered through an observed collection process, making it hard to tamper. However, for recent drug use detection within the last 5 days, a urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advised. The specimen should be measured using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory’s system, ensuring it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid scan for drug presence. It is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, but any positive findings must be verified for court acceptance. Screens that are presumed positive necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If Screening flags a sample as likely positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring a higher accuracy.
  • Offers a timeline: It shows a trend of drug consumption over time, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs become detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally costlier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
