Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Pitts, Georgia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we are experts in this field and have facilities across the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be tested. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer personalized testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing approaches have increasingly embraced hair follicle evaluations. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse authorities now opt for hair testing over traditional urine testing. Organizations with strict drug-free protocols, courts, and probation services favor hair tests. The chief advantage lies in their extensive detection timeline, often up to 90 days, with collection under observation, making it nearly fail-proof. Nevertheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the developing hair fiber. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hairs (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory system. This process includes ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial assessment for abused substances. While it is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use across most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Minimal cheating potential: Hair drug testing is tough to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can outline drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", analysis actually examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pitts, GA, hair follicle testing offers superior benefits over traditional urine tests. This method boasts unmatched accuracy in detecting long-term substance use, setting a higher standard for drug testing. Its reliable results derive from a broader detection window of up to 90 days, compared to urine testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
