In Ramhurst, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for the test. Hair tests can analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Nowadays, hair follicle testing is increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services use hair tests. Their main advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, with an observable collection method. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equal amount of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any screening results deemed presumptively positive necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (i.e., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine testing, hair tests offer significant advantages in Ramhurst, GA. The superior detection period and near-impossible evasion of results make hair testing the best choice for detailed substance use analysis.

Urine tests, while more common, do not match the accuracy and reliability of hair tests, especially for past usage. Hair testing's broader detection capabilities provide a more comprehensive assessment of drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, making it an invaluable tool in Ramhurst, GA. Unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period, hair testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days back.

This extended window offers employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, aiding in more informed evaluations and fostering a safe and drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Ramhurst, GA is lauded for its resistance to tampering. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests minimize the risk of sample adulteration, providing trustworthy results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
