In Rayle, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis, we operate testing centers nationwide, ensuring accessibility. For most tests, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be examined for drugs and alcohol/ETG, making it a versatile choice.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are preferring this over urine tests. By offering a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests suit zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements. While urine tests remain accurate for recent usage, hair tests provide a more foolproof option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in processing a laboratory drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing and induction of the sample into the lab’s system. This stage verifies the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. While it offers an economical means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive during screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days old, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficult to manipulate: A hair drug test is exceptionally hard to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a timeline of drug activity over months, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth patterns may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being labelled "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rayle, GA, the superiority of hair follicle testing over urine tests is evident in several key areas. Hair tests offer a wider detection scope, capturing a holistic view of substance history that urine tests miss.

The detection accuracy and reliability of hair testing provide unparalleled insights. It detects long-term usage, unlike urine tests which focus on recent consumption. This comprehensive approach aids employers in assessing candidate suitability.

Hair vs. Urine Testing showcases a significant difference in detection capabilities, where hair testing proves more effective for employers in substantiating drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Rayle, GA, spans up to 90 days. This long-reaching detection ability provides a thorough review of an individual’s substance use history, far surpassing the limited window of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
