Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Redan, Georgia. For those requiring hair drugs or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available nationwide for testing. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, legal bodies, and substance misuse professionals prefer this over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies and for legal entities monitoring probation individuals. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, which can capture drug use for up to 90 days, is observed during collection, making it difficult to falsify. Meanwhile, urine tests remain most accurate for recent use detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair encapsulates an extended timeline of consumption by ensnaring biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. To achieve up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances, hair should be collected directly adjacent to the scalp. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Use a jeweler’s scale for accuracy when weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair variations (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary rapid examination for illicit substances. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use for most samples, it requires confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

A presumptive positive result discovered during the Screening phase prompts further hair extraction from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most demanding method to execute.

Any positive result from screening goes through Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: The likelihood of deceiving a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data provision: It provides usage patterns over a timeframe rather than just identifying recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent consumption: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and unique hair growth rates can impact the levels of drug metabolites detected in hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
