Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug examinations here in Rhine, Georgia. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialization is unmatched. We're equipped with nationwide facilities capable of conducting hair analyses, necessitating 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or other body regions. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific requests.

Of late, hair follicle drug tests are gaining traction in the drug testing landscape. Increasingly, employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prioritize hair tests over urine tests. Those with strict no-drug policies, as well as judicial bodies and probationers, benefit from hair examinations. The standout advantage is its prolonged drug detection span of up to 90 days, with oversight ensuring the sample's authenticity, making it tamper-proof. Comparatively, urine tests hold accuracy for very recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the advancing hair shaft. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most complex technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
