Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Roberta, Georgia. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing with locations nationwide. Typically, hair should be 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body for effective testing. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has surged among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over recent years. This choice often surpasses traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers utilize hair testing due to its extended drug detection window of approximately 90 days, observed collections, and resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests still excel for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a key instrument in identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fiber as it grows, offering an extended trace of alcohol and drugs. When taken near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection window for substances. Its collection is straightforward, posing challenges to alter, and is easily sent.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will yield 100mg, optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or testing panels exceeding 10, a recommendation of 150mg is advised. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be acquired. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary steps to enter a sample into a laboratory's system, which ensures proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any presumed positives from Screening demand further secondary confirmation.

Should a Screening show presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. In this stage, the removal of drugs from hair occurs at a much lower density than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo requisite washing before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insights: They offer a usage pattern over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and unique variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
