Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint George, Georgia. If you require a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and operates testing facilities nationwide that can conduct hair analyses. Typically, hair from the crown of the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. These tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Various organizations, including employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals, now often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine analyses as part of their zero-tolerance policies. A primary advantage of hair drug testing lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days, along with an observed sample collection that minimizes the chance of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests continue to offer superior accuracy when detecting substance use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a highly effective method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches long with approximately 200 strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In context, head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary inspection for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug consumption in most instances, a positive result necessitates a confirmatory test to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other types (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to tamper: It is incredibly challenging to manipulate a hair drug analysis, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Testing? In Saint George, GA, the advantages of hair follicle drug testing are evident when compared to urine tests. Hair testing provides a more comprehensive detection range, catching longer-term drug and alcohol use that urine tests can miss. This method helps ensure that employers can maintain a drug-free workplace with greater assurance of accuracy and thoroughness.

Employers are increasingly turning to hair testing due to its superior reliability and difficult-to-compromise sample collection process. Unlike urine tests, where substitution or adulteration can occur, hair samples provide a more tamper-resistant solution, offering a clearer picture of an individual’s substance history, ensuring workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window presents a compelling reason for employers in Saint George, GA, to choose hair follicle testing. Unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection timeframe, hair analysis can reveal drug usage over the past 90 days. This expansive window gives employers a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance habits.

With such an extended detection period, hair tests provide a critical advantage in decision-making processes, enabling companies to hire or retain employees with confidence in their drug-use history. This thorough screening is essential for creating safer, performance-oriented workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over other testing methods used in Saint George, GA. The high difficulty in altering or substituting hair samples ensures that the results are trustworthy and accurate, reducing instances of tampered or false-negative results.

Employers benefit immensely from the security hair testing provides, as it eliminates many common opportunities for cheating seen in other forms of drug testing. This robust testing model supports the maintenance of strict, drug-free workplace policies and enhances overall workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
