Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sandy Plains, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing and have facilities in every city Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Recent trends show a rise in the use of hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of urine tests. Hair tests benefit employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services due to their longer detection period, lasting up to 90 days, with observed collection that is hard to tamper with. Nonetheless, for drugs used in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged record of alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs up to roughly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, providing the optimum sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or for tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest determining the weight of the sample using a jeweler’s balance. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The critical steps in the laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the beginning phase of a sample's integration into a laboratory's framework. This process incorporates verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and conveyed, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening represents an initial assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for it to be court-admissible. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample is assumed positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, substances are drawn from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to cheating: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the validity of the results.
  • Yields historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: It generally requires 5-7 days for substances to register within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage over urine testing in Sandy Plains, GA. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests detect drugs over a longer period, enhancing detection accuracy.

Urine tests may miss sporadic drug use but hair tests offer consistent reliability, presenting a comprehensive view of a person’s substance usage over time.

Employers benefit from hair testing's high accuracy, ensuring workplace safety while minimizing the risk of false negatives common with urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sandy Plains, GA keeps track of drug use over an extended timeframe of up to 90 days. This wide detection window provides a fuller picture of an individual's substance use history.

Employers gain a broader understanding of potential hires or existing employees through the long-term insights hair tests provide, compared to shorter-term tests.

Offering a retrospective look at substance use, hair tests empower employers with essential data on employee habits and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Sandy Plains, GA, hair follicle tests are designed to significantly curb the chances of tampering, providing solid, indisputable results.

The test’s observed sample collection method ensures the sample remains untampered, unlike other traditional methods where adulteration can occur.

Reliable test outcomes are secured as hair samples are less prone to adulteration, offering trustworthy results that stand up to scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
