Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Satolah, Georgia. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are shifting towards hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation monitories prefer them. The key advantage of hair tests is the extended 90-day detection period, collected via an observed method, making them tamper-proof. For drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. To ensure accuracy, weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, you may collect equivalent body hair. When we talk about head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where the sample is processed into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal use. Samples that are suspected to be positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

For a sample suspected as positive during the Screening phase, more hair is used from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. This step extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging to implement.

Confirmation of any screening results is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are cleansed before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and also adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus making the results more reliable.
  • Historical data provided: It shows a timeline of drug usage over a longer span, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they're apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
