Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scott, Georgia. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have testing centers in every city across the nation capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often utilize this test over the traditional urine test. Hair tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and is virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain reliable for detecting recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can present up to around a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair addresses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process confirms the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug assessment the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before verification as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Verification, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug evaluation is very tough, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual diversity in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
