Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Sharpsburg, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing expert, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide for hair tests. Clients generally require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from their scalp or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific hair testing needs.

In recent developments, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals frequently choose hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method appeals to employers with strict anti-drug stances, courts, and those on probation supervision. Hair follicle drug tests offer a notably extended detection range for drug consumption, up to 90 days, gathered through monitored collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected close to the scalp, it offers up to a 3-month detection period for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab's system, involving verification that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. It's a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, but a positive screen needs confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reflects historical usage: It outlines a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing, Sharpsburg, GA, experts find that hair testing offers superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which capture recent usage, hair analysis detects drug use over an extended period, making it a more reliable choice for employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
