Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Shingler, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, we specialize in hair analysis, and our testing centers, available in all Nationwide locations, can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or elsewhere on the body is acceptable. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. Many organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer a hair drug screening over urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation favor hair follicle tests. Their advantage includes a longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, making it hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture and store biomarkers in its strands, giving an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use history. By obtaining samples near the scalp, hair tests can reveal substance use within a 3-month timeframe. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional testing, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, the same amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically addressing scalp hair. All other hair types (face, underarm, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory testing for drugs encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missed data entry that an electronic custody chain doesn’t cover.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with preliminary positive results in Screening must undergo further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves gathering drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other sample types (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screening conclusions uses techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating preliminary positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenges of cheating: Altering results is extremely difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical data availability: Hair tests can expose a drug use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5 to 7 days.
  • Costliness: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Results differences: Elements such as hair color and growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
