In Silco, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis and maintain testing facilities across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specialized testing requests.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years over traditional methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair testing to urine testing. The advantage lies in the hair follicle test's extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection ensuring integrity and minimizing tampering. Despite this, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is optimal. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Note that when we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be affirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can detect drug use over a period of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug usage over a duration, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
