Providing extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Six Mile, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol testing. With specialized hair testing facilities throughout the nation, hair tests can be conducted in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair may be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method of drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for this over urine tests. Hair tests are preferred for strict no-drug policies as they provide a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, and are hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol presence for nearly 3 months. Hair sample collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen volume is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for the specimen weight. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair may be acquired. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's preliminary processing into the lab's system. This process validates the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not supplied by an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for abuse drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result demands confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Preparation. This involves drug extraction from the hair at lower concentrations than other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair testing is the most intricate approach.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples labeled as presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full laboratory flow from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can uncover drug usage for approximately 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a reduced timeframe.
  • Cheat resistance: Cheating on a hair test is infamously challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It portrays a pattern of drug consumption over time, instead of just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect new use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
