In South Newport, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair assessments and operates testing centers in cities throughout the U.S. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required in most scenarios. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has surged in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug assessments over standard urine exams. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the court system, and those on probation. The key benefit is the broader detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and virtually fraud-proof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of drug and alcohol use by locking biomarkers within the growing strand’s fibers. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG testing, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test analysis involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This phase involves checking if the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra information not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid examination for substance misuse. While Screening provides a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that show a potential positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a potential positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations considerably lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, while urine tests have a limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a pattern of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variation: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
