In Sparks, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we're experts in this field, with nationwide centers available to conduct such tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, or elsewhere on the body, is necessary for most cases. Hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug screening. A variety of employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse counselors might opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are often employed by businesses with strict no-drug use policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. A key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, making it difficult to deceive the test. However, when it comes to drug usage within the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust means for spotting drug and alcohol usage. Hair can reveal a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When the hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal usage of drugs and alcohol for roughly a three-month timeframe. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with the sample is relatively challenging, and it is simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken close to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. It's ideal to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, the reference is strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The main steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial handling of a sample by a lab, which includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid analysis for drug abuse. Being cost-effective, it aids in excluding drug usage for most samples; however, a positive finding in Screening necessitates confirmation for it to be eligible for court presentation. Any Screening samples with presumptive positives require a separate confirmation.

If a presumptive positive appears in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair in much more minute concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which positions hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples receive a wash as warranted. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for as many as 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection timeline of urine tests.
  • Difficult to tamper: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It establishes a timeline of drug usage over time, unlike only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suited for recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
