Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stewart, Georgia. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise is in hair testing, with facilities available in cities all over the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for a successful test. Hair analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. This alternative is now being required by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is the choice for those enforcing strict no-drug policies, as it offers a lengthy detection window of up to 90 days, requires observed collection, and is nearly impossible to tamper with. For detecting drug use in the last five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we're specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. It includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that appear positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, more hair is collected from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are retained from hair at a much more diluted concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex technique to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can discover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to tamper: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, hence the results are more reliable.
  • Supplies historical data: It can offer a record of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though they are often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
