Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Sunset Village, Georgia. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities nationwide, ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. They are favored by employers who enforce strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers. Hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are nearly impervious to cheating. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the strands. When clipped near the scalp, hair can exhibit a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional components, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of introducing a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This step includes confirming whether the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid analysis for drug use. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further verification.

In the event of a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly diluted concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are cleaned as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent incidents.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superior Testing Method: In Sunset Village, GA, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy. It provides a more reliable and comprehensive analysis, offering a greater understanding of an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
