Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Swords, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, this company has honed their expertise in hair analysis and boasts centers across every city Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. Hair samples are scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug screening has gained traction over traditional methods. More and more employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts require hair testing over urine tests. This method is popular among employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The standout advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over a period of up to 90 days, making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain superior for spotting usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for substances. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other testing methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long-term detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection time.
  • Difficult to subvert: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers usage trends: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It needs about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are generally more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
