Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Van Wert, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and provides testing centers in cities across the Nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body can be used. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The method of drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are now preferring a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by various groups including employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The primary advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days. The collection process is observed, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) when proximal to the scalp yields 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advocated. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If there's no scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the lab handling of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick check aimed at identifying drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient solution for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a screening outcome is presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenge to falsify results: It's very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a timeline of drug use over a duration, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
