Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening in Varnell, Georgia. If you require drug or alcohol testing by hair, our expertise caters to these needs nationally. Testing demands 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other customizable options.

In recent times, drug testing strategies have increasingly embraced hair follicle methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests benefit employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary settings, and probation checks due to their ability to reveal drug use over 90 days with a supervised collection method, effectively eliminating tampering. Yet, urine tests maintain accuracy for recent (within five days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and substance intake by trapping biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen consisting of a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is preferred. It is advisable to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it is specific to scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing drug tests in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial intake of the sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any remaining data entry requirements absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for drugs use. This stage is an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples; however, confirmation is necessary for court acceptance of a positive outcome. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Reduced possibility of cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical usage information: It reveals a usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Typically, drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the underlying scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
