Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Warm Springs, Georgia. For needs regarding hair or alcohol testing, we excel in delivering such services with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is required, or body hair can be used. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other tailored testing options.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has seen a rise, particularly among employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals favoring it over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers often require hair drug tests. The extended detection period makes hair follicle tests beneficial, tracking drug use up to 90 days and minimizing the chance for deception. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of substances due to the encapsulation of biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and can be conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used instead. When mentioning head hair, we strictly refer to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses other hair forms (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s operations. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling additional data input missing from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for signs of drug abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that preliminarily test positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at a significantly lower density than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that exhibit a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers chronological data: Analyzes can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a timeframe, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs only become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair strands.

Note: Even though it is frequently termed a "hair follicle test", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
