Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Washington, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. Our nationwide centers are equipped to perform hair tests, utilizing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, as well as courts and Substance Abuse professionals, now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer zero-tolerance drug use detection, are utilized in legal cases and probation situations, and provide a detection window of up to 90 days. Although for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the filament of the hair strand during its growth. Hair collected near the scalp can indicate drug and alcohol usage for a timeframe reaching up to roughly 90 days. The collection process for hair is straightforward, its integrity is difficult to compromise, and it ships without hassle.

An optimal 1.5-inch cluster of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg, suitable for both general screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplemental, or extended tests exceeding 10 panels, acquiring 150mg of hair is encouraged. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale to ensure accurate specimen weight. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is divided into four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with incorporating the sample into the laboratory database. This step entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for indicators of drug abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in the bulk of samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples yielding a presumptive positive from Screening mandate further confirmation testing.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than possible with other methods (such as urine or saliva), thus making hair drug analysis a notably complex process.

The Confirmation phase for any positive results obtained from Screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples yielding presumptive positives undergo a cleansing process prior to Confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair Designation and accreditation standards ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Resilient against manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Hair drug tests offer insights into drug consumption patterns over time, rather than just highlighting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", this examination focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Washington, GA, surpasses urine tests with its enhanced accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a broader detection period, up to 90 days. This extensive window provides employers with a thorough insight into an individual’s substance use history.

Hair tests are advantageous due to their robust detection abilities that are less likely to be influenced by recent activities than traditional urine tests. This makes them an accurate measure of long-term patterns rather than momentary events.

The superiority of hair tests is evident in the level of detail and consistency they offer, particularly in comparison to urine tests. For employers and agencies in Washington, GA, who prioritize drug-free policies, hair tests are the clear choice.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Washington, GA, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which can trace substance use up to 90 days. This is invaluable in obtaining a comprehensive view of a candidate’s substance history and ensuring workplace safety.

Unlike other methods that offer shorter detection periods, hair testing gives a broader and more in-depth insight into past behaviors. This extended window allows employers to identify patterns over time, aiding in making informed decisions regarding employment.

In Washington, GA, the importance of a prolonged detection period is paramount. Hair follicle testing’s ability to capture long-term use ensures that employers have a detailed understanding of an individual’s substance history, enhancing the accuracy of assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Washington, GA, greatly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are difficult to manipulate, ensuring the reliability of results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
