Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Wesley, Georgia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair testing allows us to conduct these tests in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often require a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals. The main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a significant tool, hair testing effectively uncovers drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the hair's structure as it grows. Harvested near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol traces spanning up to approximately three months. Collection is easy, it's somewhat challenging to tamper with, and it ships conveniently.

A 1.5-inch collection, around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or over 10-panel tests, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement is recommended. In situations where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in a lab's processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the initial sample introduction into the lab’s system. Tasks include validation of the sample's seal and proper shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), alongside completing any necessary additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening institutes a rapid preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient in ruling out drug use in numerous samples, any positive result in Screening must undergo confirmation to be credible in court. Samples yielding a presumptive positive require subsequent confirmation.

With a presumptively positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations here than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a particularly complex procedure to perform.

Validating any positive Screening finding is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples receive a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can track drug intake for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Being difficult to tamper with, hair drug tests yield more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical use data: It presents a usage pattern over time, not merely immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inadequate for recent use detection: Drugs become hair-detectable after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Collection costs: Hair drug testing tends to incur higher expenses compared to other testing procedures.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can sway the concentration metrics of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the procedure assesses the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Wesley, GA, the superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests stand out. Hair testing offers a much broader insight into drug use, making it a preferred method for employers seeking thorough screening results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
