Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing in West Point, Georgia. For hair or alcohol screenings, our expertise in hair tests is unmatched, and we operate centers across the nation that can conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. Hair tests may detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored screening options.

Lately, conducting drug tests using hair follicles has become more common. Many workplaces, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine screenings. They're preferred by those with stringent drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs. A major advantage is their extended detection window of about 90 days, made tough to tamper with due to supervised collection. Yet for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs because it traps biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to roughly 90 days. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and panels above 10, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Precise weighing using a jeweler’s scale is advised. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair incorporates all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in processing a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial swift check for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results necessitate additional confirmation.

With presumptive positives at the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can find drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Cheating is challenging: It's hard to tamper with a hair drug test, thus increasing accuracy.
  • Historic data: Offers a timeline of drug use over time, unlike reflecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the testing actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
