Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Weston, Georgia. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing ensures access to our testing facilities across all U.S. cities. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically needed. These hair tests can assess the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods has grown. These tests are increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, favoring hair tests over urine ones. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation benefit from hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-duration record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a markedly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
