Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screenings in Whigham, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair examinations, with facilities spread across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp; body hair may also be used in certain situations. Hair analyses are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various tailored testing choices.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly popular for drug screening in recent years. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer using hair tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals under probation frequently depend on hair tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is that it offers a much more extended detection period for drugs, usually up to 90 days; the collection is monitored, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, when detecting very recent drug usage within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained traction as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair holds a long-term account of substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When samples are cut close to the head, they can reveal drug and alcohol use over the past three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. To test for EtG, additional metrics, and/or 10+ panel tests, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advised. If no scalp hair is available, a similar volume of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial handling of a sample in a lab system. This phase includes validating that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug presence. While Screening provides a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, a court-admissible result requires confirmation of any positive screen. Samples that initially indicate presence in Screening need another confirmation.

If Screening suggests positive results, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug analysis as the most daunting methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each sample indicating potential presence is cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Reveals usage history: Provides insights into consumption patterns over time, rather than reflecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs only become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally cost more than other testing options.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets hair strands rather than the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
