In White Sulphur Springs, Georgia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we offer our services across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for sampling. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options for hair testing.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased recently among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, replacing regular urine testing. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation requirements tend to choose hair tests due to their prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, secure collection process, and difficulty in tampering. That said, urine tests remain top in efficacy for detecting recent use, under 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a timeline of such substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands. If cut close to the scalp, a hair sample can offer a detection period of around 90 days for substances. It is convenient to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

An ideal sample for analysis and validation consists of a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hairs (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, equating to 100mg. For tests including EtG or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be procured. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step entails ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a rapid initial examination for the presence of drugs. Though a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screening must be authenticated to be valid in legal contexts. All samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening demand additional confirmation.

Should a sample return a positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are drawn out from the hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most intricate processes.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample with a presumptive positive is thoroughly washed before confirmation where necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is verified under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair testing can reveal drug use extending to 90 days, unlike the shorter period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Its resistance to cheating enhances the accuracy of hair test results.
  • Offers historical insight: It supplies a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent indulgence.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs are traceable in hair only approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
