Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Willacoochee, Georgia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing choices.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The chief advantage of these tests is their extended detection span for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, while utilizing an observable collection process, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. It offers an extended history by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal a detection period up to around three months for alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and is simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests greater than 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is suggested. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is advised. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair includes other body areas (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This stage involves checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, giving it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs. Though Screening is cost-efficient in detecting drug usage in most samples, positive results from Screening must be confirmed for court use. Any sample showing a presumptive positive in Screening needs an additional confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive results in Screening undergo Confirmation with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before Confirmation as required. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a significantly shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It presents a drug use pattern over extended periods, not limited to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Characteristics like hair color and personal growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
