Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Winokur, Georgia. Specialized in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers across all U.S. cities that can conduct these tests. Typically, hair on the crown or body of about 1.5 to 2 inches is required. The tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction in drug monitoring. This testing method is increasingly preferred by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation officers use it for its key advantage: detecting drug use over a 90-day period, conducted under observation, making it hard to falsify. Still, for recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When taken close to the scalp, hair testing can show drug and alcohol consumption for up to nearly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest gauging the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests mainly comprises four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data absent from an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. While it's a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive screen warrants further confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require additional verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug testing being one of the most complex testing methodologies.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to tamper with: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures the accuracy of results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can outline a pattern of substance use over an extended duration, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
